Student Success Statement

"Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right & important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction."
~ Margaret Thatcher

To do the right thing can mean everything, it is important to realize that what you are doing may be the wrong thing. Recognize and analyze right from wrong and question yourself "why is it wrong?" Although sometimes times get rough and you may not know what to do, if you want to go through the high road to success and satisfaction you must pass all the difficult things and avoid the wrong to reach that. Now, in order to accomplish this you need the discipline; you need to teach yourself and others what to do—when they don’t know what they should do and they are under difficult times, under pressure, right from wrong? Teach and be taught—discipline yourself and reach the your goals.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 3

Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibly. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money, “he says.   “In most cases, you can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences.” In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.

School Comes First
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for skills  should always be your top priority.  MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are rushing through your assignments . . . or no studying enough for test because of work, its time to cut back or quit and find a less-timing consuming job.”

I think this quote means that the actions you do or say will determine what kind of person are you. What you do defines you and vice versa, what you do is who you are; what you are is what you do. Basically, what this is saying is that, everything you do will shape who you are. If you are always making jokes, then you are the class clown a goofy person. So, if you want to be a good person and show others, then do good things. If you want to do wrong, then be bad person like cheat and lie. But you should do the right thing and show who you are!
“ What you are will show in what you do.”
~ Thomas A. Edison

Balancing High School Part-Time Part 2

Voicing you goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both—work and study—successfully. To help answer this question, ask yourself:
v
Am I am organize person ?
v  What kind of study habits do I have?
v  Do I make a good use of my available time ?
v  Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part time job?

Think about the pros and the cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibility- and, of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the times you have for sleeping, studying, and socializing.

Grandparents locked girl in bathroom for 6 years.

This is such a horrible and tragic thing for anyone to experience. How can these people do such a mean thing to their own little granddaughter? This little girl being locked in a restroom for 6 years! That is crazy. Most people could barely go 1 hour in a room doing nothing, but imagine 6 years and only being able to come out for school. Imagine when they girl had to go to school she was probably very happy she was out of the restroom. The little girl deserved to be free, to play and have fun not to be locked her in the restroom the whole day. This just shows that her grandparents are very mean and irresponsible people and deserve to be charged for first degree felony in prison for 10 years.

Balancing High School & Part-Time Work part 1

Like many high school students, you may want – or need- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time & energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work & your education.

Important Considerations
You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your counselor to discuss the ideas of working, Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you are seeking.

~ Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor from 161 AD to 180 AD

This quote is trying to say that you should spread around rumors. You wouldnt want someone to make lies about you , so why would you do it about others. If you know something is bad then dont do it , or even think about doing it. Just simply dont do it.

" In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing."
~ Theodore Roosevelt

An example of this will be : you are out at a party and they offer you to drink, yes you are 22, but you are still living at home w/ your parents, and they prohibit you to drink! So what do you do? You should do what is right. If you know that if you drink is something that your parents wouldn't want then don’t drink, do the right thing!
So when you are deciding whether to do something, you should always pick the right thing to do no matter what !

Selecting Your Courses Part 5

The Arts
Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized tests. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.
Many colleges require or recommend one or 2 semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio, art, dance, music & drama. Many students have talents & extraordinary abilities in the arts.
Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identify their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.

Advanced Placement Program® (AP®)
To be sure you are ready to take on college-level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3.0 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success & college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.

Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get by,” instead, take challenging and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher peaks of achievement.

"To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice"
~ confucius

You should always do what is right . No matter where you are. You should not do something bad if you know it is wrong . For example cheating on a test, the scenario here is an important exam that you must pass—only thing is; you didn't study! What do you do? You definitely DO NOT look over and cheat off of someone- why? Because you clearly and purely know that it is wrong and faulty, but if you go ahead and do it—you are the worst COWARD there can be.

Selecting Your Courses Part 4

Social Studies
You can better understand local & world events that are happening now by studying the culture & history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
v  U.S. history ( 2 semesters)
v  U.S. government (one semester)
v  World history or geography ( one semester)
v  On additional semester in the above or the other areas

Foreign Languages
Solid foreign language study shows colleges you’re willing to stretch beyond the basics. Many colleges require at least 2 years of study in the same foreign language, & some prefer more.
Learning a foreign language can be a challenge but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, & having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition in a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to master new languages.

“Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the (3) magic keys to living your life with integrity.”

Poem Tis the set of the Sail

‘Tis the set of the Sail
Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916

But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and way, and a way.
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go
One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Recommended Classes for College Success Part 1

The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least 5 solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advance courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamental before going on to more advanced work

“ A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.”
~ Thomas Carlyle

If a person doesn't have goals for themselves then they will not succeed or accomplish anything in life. If a ship doesn’t have a rudder it will not move in any direction. It will just be stuck in the water like a person will be stuck with nothing to do.

The Power of Study Groups Part 4

Getting the Most Out of a Session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study sessions:

·         Decide what you’re going to do in advance.

·         Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.

·         Take turns teaching, to reinforce your own knowledge.
·         Stick to the session topic.

By supplying your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends.
Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushed you to try a little harder & be a little better. If someone pulls you sown the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies). & you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study w/ others.

The Power of Study Groups part 3

part 3
Guidelines for Getting a Group Together
Here are some guidelines for creating & running a study groups: How many? Create a group of 4-6 people. In a larger group, it’s easy for someone to get left out & smaller groups can too be easily get off track.
Who? Pick classmates who seem to share your interest in doing well academically. Look for people who stay alert in class, take notes, ask questions & respond to the teacher’s questions. Include someone who understand the material better than you and can explain the concepts and someone who doesn’t understand it as well, to whom you can explain the material.
Where? Hold study group sessions in a place that is free of distractions & that has room to spread out books & notes. How long? Meet for no  more than two to three hours at a time. Having a time limit helps the group focus. If you know only have an hour, you’re more likely to stay on task. When? Try to meet regularly, on the same day and time each week. Treating the study session as you would other activities helps you to keep to a schedule and ensures that everyone attends.

How to Take on College Studying part 3

Do the reading
You need to do more than just read the chapters you are assigned - you’re expected to understand them thoroughly. Here are some tips:
v Don’t skim. Read all the materials carefully.
v Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest – chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.
v Look up any words that you don’t understand.
v Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that is unclear.
v Take notes instead of highlighting – this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.
v Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.
